Reading Lasses in Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book Town, was created and opened by Pamela Carter Hood and Angela Everitt in December 1997. Before then, we both worked as academics in Newcastle upon Tyne, specialising in these subjects. Our range of books is intended to be of interest to all kinds of people - from those simply wanting a good read to those with specialised interests in these subjects.

Eating at ReadingLasses

Our coffee is freshly ground from Café-Direct fair trade espresso beans.

Our smoked produce is from the Marrbury Smokehouse, Bargrennan. Wild salmon from the River Cree, local Galloway Cheddar and chicken breasts are smoked over whisky barrel embers using traditional methods. Our cheese boards combine smoked cheese with hand-made cheeses from the Locharthur Creamery, Beeswing. Crannog, a full-fat soft cheese with green peppercorns, delicate and full-flavoured, and the cloth-bound Cheddar, are made from organic unpasteurised milk from the Locharthur Farm.

Our home-made bread is seeded granary hand-made by the Wigwam Bakery in Creetown, with nibbed wheat flour, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds, organic cold-pressed olive oil, sea salt and wild flower honey.

Our soups, cakes and pies are baked in the ReadingLasses kitchen from the finest ingredients.
